The families who let us into their hardest week.

The call came on a Tuesday. Mom had fallen, recovered, and decided she was ready to move into a retirement community. The contract was already signed. She had eight weeks to vacate the family home of forty-three years, a 3,200 sq ft farmhouse on the edge of Davidson County. None of her three adult children lived in North Carolina.

We began with a Saturday walkthrough and a written plan by the following Tuesday. Bedrooms first, because that is where Mom slept and where the most fragile decisions lived. We worked four afternoons a week, three to four hours at a time, never pushing past Mom’s focus. Every item kept got photographed, measured, and entered into a digital inventory. Items going to each of the three children were photographed, packed, and shipped directly to their homes, with tracking numbers sent to the family group text. Donations went to the local senior thrift store and a church food pantry that had taken Mom’s casseroles for thirty years.

Move week, we coordinated MyVault for an in-between storage window, supervised the licensed mover, and unpacked the apartment over two days. The first night, Mom’s bed was made with her own quilt, her favorite photographs were on the dresser, and her teakettle was on the stove. The eldest daughter, who flew in from Boston for move-day, walked into her mother’s new apartment and cried. She had been bracing for chaos. She found a home.
