About the founder

Meet Melissa.

The discipline of a culinary career, applied to the most personal logistics in a family’s life.

Melissa Darr, founder of Generational Transitions

Melissa Darr’s story

For more than twenty-five years, Melissa Darr ran professional culinary kitchens and led the staff inside them. She spent over seven years as a Division Chef at Lowes Foods and served as Director of Food Services at several private schools in North Carolina and Virginia. That work was built on logistics, inventory control, training, and keeping complex operations calm under real pressure.

In 2020, she stepped away from the kitchen. Watching her own family navigate the question of what to do with a parent’s home and a parent’s things, she saw how few people were doing this work well, and how badly families needed someone who could. She founded Generational Transitions that year. The same skills that ran a kitchen now run a senior move: everything sorted, everything inventoried, everything documented, with the patience the moment demands.

Six years later, she has helped families across Lexington, Salisbury, Winston-Salem, High Point, and Davidson County move into smaller homes, retirement communities, and elder care. She has also helped families on the other end, when a parent has passed and the house has to be sorted, the heirlooms documented, the estate closed.

Team

Melissa works hands-on with every client. For larger projects she brings in trusted helpers, vetted personally.

Our mission

“Every client receives the dignity, privacy and set expectations in the community with individually tailored services in an honest manner by a genuine, caring person.”

Our philosophy

“To dually benefit the seniors and their families in receiving creditable, personal assistance and genuine knowledge for life’s moves with helping those in our communities live their best life.”

Document everything

Every box numbered, every heirloom catalogued, every decision recorded. The paper trail outlasts the move.

Move at your pace

Six months or six weeks. We work the speed your parent can absorb, not the speed someone else demands.

Tell the truth

If a service isn’t right for you, we’ll say so. If we’re booked, we’ll refer you on. Reputation is local and small.

Community

Generational Transitions is built where Melissa lives. She works regularly with families transitioning into and out of retirement communities and villages across the region, coordinates moves with MyVault Portable Storage, and partners with Artifcts, a national resource, for permanent digital heirloom archives. Local partners include Triad Referral Partners of Lexington, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Pastor’s Pantry. Printed materials are designed and produced locally by Davidson Speed Printing.

Through HIPPS of Davidson County and the Lexington Chamber, Melissa stays connected to the professionals families turn to during these transitions: elder law attorneys, geriatric care managers, financial advisors, real estate agents who understand the senior market. When a family needs more than we offer, we know who to call.
